A Visitor and Tourist Guide to Paris, Texas

Paris Texas

The Crape Myrtle Capital of Texas

The Culbertson Fountain completed in 1927

Located in the Heart of the Red River Valley, you will find the "Second Largest Paris in the World."  Paris, Texas is a historical city that was the jumping off place in the building of the great State of Texas. Paris was founded in 1839 and became the Lamar County seat in 1845. Paris is a major player in the Texas economy within the northeastern part of the state.

With a population of about 26,000 and growing, Paris is home to numerous beautiful parks, the Culbertson Fountain on the Square, Lake Crook and the Sam Bell Maxey State Historic Structure. The historic buildings surrounding the fountain has some great old buildings that appear as they did in the early Texas settlement days.

The R. F. Scott Building proudly stands on the corner of the square today as it did in the early years. The bank building is just as beautiful today as it was in the years past.

The Plaza Theatre opened in 1926 and now houses the Paris Community Theatre. The Grand Theatre was constructed in  1937 and was the largest theater in the area for years. Its fly-loft was the tallest west of the Mississippi. It is now closed and considered for renovation.

With the Paris Junior College mascot statue, Pyro the dragon, and the grave monument of Jesus in Cowboy Boots at the Evergreen Cemetery, you have to believe that Paris would come up with an Eiffel Tower that is quite different from the Paris, France original. Their erected steel structure stands 65 feet tall and sports a large tipped red cowboy hat on the top.

Evergreen Cemetery is known for its history of early Texans. The cemetery began in 1866 and it is famous for the number of 40,000 people buried there. It is quite possible that you may have some ancestor buried there if you have a Texas connection. .There is also a 12 foot Willet Babcock funeral statue referred to as "Jesus in Cowboy Boots."

Whether you are looking for a perfect weekend getaway from big city stress, go fishing in any of the local lakes, do some family history research, see the historical buildings and beautiful parks, Paris, Texas is waiting for your arrival. The friendly people in Paris will make your trip a fun vacation and you will want to return again and again!
